Obituary for James E. Gillen

James E. Gillen, 92, of Irvona, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 in Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehab Center, Clearfield.
Born on July 26, 1926 in Madera, he was the son of the late Frank and Rachel (Richardson) Gillen.
Mr. Gillen graduated from the Madera High School in 1944. On June 2, 1949, he wed the former Shirley E. Granville in the Ramey United Methodist Parsonage, who survives at home. He served in the Army during WWII and attended the Coalport CMA Church. He worked as a coal miner for 26 years. He started at Rushton Coal Co. in Osceola Mills for 14 years and then moved on to Barnes and Tucker Coal Co. in Ebensburg, then Mid Penn Coal Co in Madera. He also worked for the Swank Brick Yard in Irvona as a boss from 1960-1970.
He was a member of the Richard L. Beers VFW Post#7043, Coalport; UMWA Local 1520, Osceola Mills; Glendale Sportsmans Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David Terry Gillen, and his wife Carolyn, of Strongstown; a daughter, Jill Gillen of Northern Cambria; three grandchildren, Frank Gillen, Anthony Belgin, and Andrew Belgin; and a sister, Jeannette Gavlak of Houtzdale.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Floyd Gillen, and eight sisters, Lillian Beal, Irene Washic, Hazel Willey, Marie Dawkins, Velma Dinant, Evelyn Fowler, Jean Supko, and Sandra Shedlock.
Friends will be received 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday and 11-1 PM Saturday at Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., Madera. Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 PM with Rev. Darrell Irvine officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, Madera.
