Julia A. (Popovich) Checkaneck, 96, of Blackburn, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at UPMC Altoona..

Born July 4, 1918 in Blackburn, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Prelock) Popovich.

Julia married Michael J. Checkaneck June 14, 1952 in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ramey.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Checkaneck of Blackburn, and Joan Fowler, and her husband Dennis, of Philipsburg, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 24, 1999; two sisters, Mary Banko and Ann LaPenna; and five brothers, John “Jack” Popovich, Mickey Popovich, George Popovich, Joseph Popovich, and Andrew Popovich. She was the last of her generation.

A private family viewing will be held Wed from 6-8 PM at the Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., Ramey, PA Parastas services will be sung at 7 PM in the funeral home with Rev. Anthony Balistreri.

A Panikhida Service will be 10:00 AM Thursday at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramey, PA, with Fr. Anthony Balistreri officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Ramey, PA.
